Raptor Fossils – Forgotten Depot [UT3]

This map was my second public release for Unreal Tournament 3. Website 3DBuzz.com were running a contest called the “Old School Unreal Map Contest” or something along those lines. Basically the idea was that level makers were to make a level using only the assets that came with the Unreal Tournament 3 game (ie. no custom textures, no custom models, no custom sounds, etc.). Some people also took the competition to the next level and made maps using primarily BSP brush work instead of a lot of models and so on. We had to keep a work in progress forum post updated regularly to show our work and so on (unfortunately the entire forum for this contest has been deleted now 🙁 ). The prizes were as such:

1st and 2nd runners-up got:

  • A copy of Unreal Tournament 3 signed by the Epic Games development team
  • A Playstation 3 console (or $500 cash)
  • A video review (up to 30 minutes) complete with screen captured gameplay by Logan and Terry from 3D buzz

The contest winner got:

  • $1,000 cash
  • A copy of Unreal Tournament 3signed by the Epic Games development team
  • A Playstation 3 console (or $500 cash)
  • A video review (up to 30 minutes) complete with screen captured gameplay by Logan and Terry from 3D buzz
  • A video review (up to 30 minutes) complete with screen captured gameplay by Epic Games Design Director (now former) Cliff Bleszinski

So it was a pretty big deal to those of us who entered it. Needless to say, I didn’t win any thing, but I did enjoy getting feedback from all the other entrants, and at the end of it all the 3dbuzz guys did a podcast and gave each level a quick few-minute review, so that was nice to hear as well. Unfortunately all this stuff has been lost with the forum deletion (as far as I can tell anyway).

Anyway, the level itself is a space station, a supply depot, that has been forgotten (hence the name). There’s a few different levels and areas. Firstly, on the lower portion of the map, there is a small arena area. In the center of this area is a speed altering volume that slows down players, projectiles, etc. In the center of this slow field is the UDamage. Players can fall directly into this slow field and on top of the UDamage from the level above. To the side of the slow field is two small areas with weapons, and two stargate-style teleporters. These teleporters lead to the top level.

The main platform has a whole lot of crates and other clutter, as well as jump-pads that lead to various areas. There are several weapons scattered around and a suspended platform off to the side with the sniper rifle.

Finally, the top level is two interior areas joined by a catwalk/bridge. In the middle of the catwalk is the shield belt. Each interior area has a teleporter that leads to the teleporters on the bottom.

This map was received quite well by players, with the biggest complaint being that it was very dark (which, to be honest, was intentional – probably a lingering influence from mapping for the darker gothic-themed Quake games). Lots of players seemed to love the teleporters.

And here’s some screenshots 🙂
